MIDDLE SCHOOL
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Kupukupu: The kupukupu represents the perpetual “shooting forth” of creative ideas and the continuous growth of a student’s vision. These spaces serve as fertile ground for imagination, where haumāna are encouraged to continually sprout new concepts. Symbolically, they reflect the process of growing into new fields—expanding knowledge, exploring possibilities, and cultivating innovation.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) is essential to the HIDOE’s mission to ensure all students graduate prepared for success in college, careers, and citizenship. Beyond The Core are the Middle School program spaces on the continuum of EXPOSE (Elementary) – EXPLORE (Middle) – EXPERIENCE (High) where students get to explore outside their Core curriculum with elective programs that link to the 13 CTE Pathways offered at the High School level. Beyond The Core combines academic instruction with project-based learning experiences and students earn required elective credits for promotion to High School.
At the Middle School level, these programs are often, but not limited to, introductory versions of those offered at corresponding High Schools and offerings may change when/if CTE Academies and focus areas evolve at the high school. The Low-, Medium-, and High-Intensity Labs are intended to be flexible and easily adaptable to changing or evolving career pathways. Other elective rooms are more specialized, such as for 3-D Art, Band, or PE Fitness but still need to be adaptable to possible program changes.
Learning environments should support highly engaging, hands-on learning curricula and spaces should accommodate high degrees of movement and activity. Strong connection to outdoor learning lanai areas may be required, with easy fluidity between inside and outside. Consider proper orientation, security, and possible shading of lanai areas to increase usability.
