HIGH SCHOOL
HIGH SCHOOL
Kou: The kou represents the concept of a safe haven, mirroring the cooling shade that traditionally offered a place for people to gather and rest. This library and learning space is designed to be a sanctuary for intellectual discovery, providing a peaceful environment where haumāna can seek refuge in study and community connection.
In future-forward High Schools, libraries are transforming into dynamic, student-centered learning environments that go beyond traditional quiet spaces and book storage. The Library Multipurpose Learning Center functions as a vibrant student centric hub that supports academic, social, and emotional growth. With flexible layouts, movable furniture, and acoustic treatments, they contribute to collaboration, creativity, and group work, while providing a large multipurpose area easily reconfigured for guest speakers, student presentations, team gatherings, testing, and other school-wide uses. It is used constantly from before school, throughout the day, and even after regular school hours. Flexibility to accommodate the varying uses is critical.
Utilizing the concept of progressive acoustical zoning, libraries can meet varying and changing needs of all students. The first connected yet distinct zone supports student socialization and discussion through the use of easily movable soft seating. The second zone encourages more collaborative project work and study. Tables and chairs in various configurations provide interactive learning opportunities. The third zone is for focused concentration as well as a calming space that promotes reading, for study or for fun. This can even be created as a glassed in space to provide quiet yet remain highly supervisable, as is needed in all spaces.
Note:
Diagrams are not drawn to scale and should not be read as floor plan layouts.
