Niu: The niu represents the foundation of Hawaiian expression, as its wood was traditionally used to fashion the pahu drums that carry the rhythm of performance and storytelling. In these spaces, the niu represents a space for creative expression, where haumāna are supported in exploring the performing arts, finding creative sustenance, and expressing their cultural and artistic identities.
Performing arts education provides a variety of instrumental and choral music, theater, and dance, infused with culturally relevant programs such as ukulele, Hawaiian music and hula. Music education features a mix of marching and concert band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles as well as music appreciation classes. Programs range from large-scale choirs and bands to smaller, specialized ensembles or even keyboarding classes.
Theater programs encompass aspects of productions, from acting to set, costume and props design and construction, as well as event technology that involves specialized lighting and audio production and recording.
